I recently spent time with a young man who, when I complimented his shirt, stated proudly, “it’s from Battlestar Galactica!” Now, not all girls are as revved up as geekery as I. Which I kept to myself because, hey, geekiness is hot.

These tees address many fandoms with one basic design, and don’t out you for atomic wedgies at the mall.

This here made me feel feelings.

Luckily, it was only for the duration. Unluckily, I got something in both of my eyes while watching it. It may have even appeared that I was tearing up. And I don’t even like Regina Spektor.

ANNABELLE LEE

Author: Edgar Allan Poe

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love -
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulcher
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me
Yes! that was the reason
(as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we
Of many far wiser than we
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.
For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride,
In the sepulcher there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Something about nerds being all revved up is kinda hot. This pinup calendar is for the fanboy in your life. (Or fangirl, if she swings that way.) With regular and *geeky* holidays. Can we get one with nerdy boys, please?

Hello… Newark?

So, I moved to Newark.  It’s weird.  I actually seriously dig it here.  I loved and will always love Brooklyn, but Newark is like what I imagine Brooklyn used to be like.  Everything here seems so undiscovered and ignored and just waiting for a bunch of crazy kids to move in and repurpose it in some kind of DIY revolution.  My house is like that.

So I was excited to see this article linked and discussed everywhere this week.  Apparently Newark is turning around.  That would almost be too bad.  Newark’s got so much grit to it but it’s open and …clean in a way Brooklyn isn’t.  I’m 10 minutes from the Holland and 10 minutes from a Target and Wal-Mart in Union.  If Whitey McHipster came over from Brooklyn and priced my ass out I’d be so upset.  All the good ethnic places would be replaced with Tempo Prestos.  And I’d have to listen to douchey  conversations on the Path train.

Hipsters, stay back!

Harry Potter Slashers vindicated, Dumbledore’s OMG teh gay!

Slashers in the HP fandom, I’ve heard, have always vocally hoped someone, anyone in the HP books would be confirmed as gay.  We they got their wish this week when JKR confirmed what no one seemed to suspect.  Dumbledore was totally gay for Grindelwald!  Ha, ha.  So cool.  And fandom imploded.  And imploded again.  It even made Wikipedia.

I think now it’s safe for JKR to tell us what we already know- Harry and Draco were secretly in love with each other all those years and it’s bittersweet when they see each other with their kids and beards wives.  Harry/Draco OTP!

Dammam, Asharq Al-Awsat- Members of Khobar’s Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice were the victims of an attack by two Saudi females, Asharq Al-Awsat can reveal.According to the head of the commission in Khobar, two girls pepper sprayed members of the commission after they had tried to offer them advice.

Girlfriends, when y’all get your driving rights please come over to the west and smoke a hookah with us.  The shisha’s on me!

On the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, you can shout out our down-south siblings with one of these cool Storyville tees.  There are some New Orleans centric ones, some not.  In addition to this one, I’m quite fond of “make levees, not war” but what do I know?

Since transit is fucked, I OMG want one!

Well, I’ve wanted a Vespa for eons anyway.  But check out this sweet modded one on Engadget:

It’s come to my attention that the bar of my youth, of drunken Seanchai gigs and late-night cider swilling, is closed or closing. I met my ex-husband there, and countless bad boy blow-ins from Belfast before that. The best bar in New York City, driven out by skyrocketing rents.

The good news is- and this is excellent news- it’s moving to Red Hook. Aw, yeah!

Still, raise a glass. It’s as good a reason as any. >cue sad montage music<

…with peacock pasties. I know guys eventually like it all off, but pasties are so underused in the bedroom. The one titty adornment that doesn’t require an oxygen-supply enemy of a brassiere, *and* if you get good enough you can make the tassels twirl. These gorgeous feathered ones are visually stunning and almost modest. (Well, they’re pasties!) And again, check the seller’s main page if the link dies.

Ah, ha. Ha ha ha… Sugartits.

A worthy tribute to the best magazine ever

Through the years, I’ve often reflected on Sassy and its cultural influence on the climate I grew up in, myself, and my friends.  We still use Sassy slang, and I know for a fact Sassy invented fitted tees and celeb portmanteaus.  When I heard there was a book about it all, I was excited but skeptical it would be able to capture what that magazine truly meant to me.

And yet it does, perfectly.  The exciting realization that yes, there were other girls like me and we were infinitely cooler than the cookie cutter types, the DIY fashion pages that were super-cool, the laugh out loud funny staff writings I still remember vividly, and of course, the betrayed feeling when after that interminable absence we were presented with what was called “Stepford Sassy.“  I was strangely surprised to learn so many other girls felt like they lost a friend.

So if you feel the way I do, and I know a lot of you do, have a look at How Sassy Changed My Life: A Love Letter to the Greatest Teen Magazine of All Time.  It’s sad and even emotional to read, but it’s worth it to reminisce about something that was so pivotal in the lives of many strong, sassy women today.

…and it remains to be seen if he smokes dope.  But this is seven shades of awesome!  We’re bringing back Latin mass pre-Vatican 2 stylee!  Rock!

A papal decree said priests should now meet requests by the faithful to hold mass in the traditional Church language, which had widely been dropped after the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s.

“In parishes where there is a stable group of faithful who adhere to the earlier liturgical tradition, the pastor should willingly accept their request to celebrate the Mass according to the rite of the Roman Missal published in 1962…,” said the decree.

Or, er, Brooklyn.  You ever see something on the street and it catches your eye and you wonder WTF the deal is, and then you keep seeing it and you have to hunt it down and wear it no matter what?  Yes?  No?  Am I the only one?  I’d seen this shirt a few times and then the final time I snapped and had to have it.  After some furious clicking, I learned that it is exclusive to Vinnie’s Styles on Flatbush Ave., and it’s only available in store.  Still and all, it was totally worth the walk.

I am an unapologetic Harry Potter fangirl. I have a total penchant for Cosplay, and soon as I found these socks, I knew my rollergirl alter-ego had to have a pair. They’re so comfy and well-made, and the price is totally unbeatable. I especially like how you can sport your house colors unobtrusively with a cute skirt and top. Gryffindor, stand up!

I’ve always loved how Lil’ Kim revels in the title of Queen Bitch, and Queen Latifah never went by the apologetic “Princess Latifah”- Queens are the ones to order people’s heads off.  I really want one of these custom crown rings, but I’m totally at a loss to the engraved part.  Either way, the rustic look and stamping are totally awesome.
